Wakizashi is a traditional Japanese short sword. Its shape is similar to that of the katana but smaller. The wakizashi was used from the outset as a defense weapon for the samurai, when he did not have the katana. Being shorter and more manageable, it was more suitable for defence in enclosed spaces.
