Roland was an historic commander of the Franks in the service of Charlemagne. He died in the battle of Roncesvalles at the hands of the Vascones on 15th August, 778. Legend has it that with a blow of his sword Durendal, he opened a pass in the Pyrenees known as "La Brèche de Roland".
